Steps to Boot Windows XP Faster

This trick will work only to those who have one Hard Disk Drive(HDD) on their primary IDE Channel (nothing else on 0 or 1 ) and a CD-ROM/DVD-ROM as Second Boot device.Each time you boot XP there is an updated file called NTOSBOOT-*.pf, which appears in prefetch directory and there's no need to erase any other files as the new prefetch option in XP really improves loading time of installed programs. We only want Windows XP to boot faster and not decrease its performance.

  • Open Notepad and type " del c:windowsprefetch tosboot-*.* /q " and save the file as "ntosboot.bat" in Drive C.
  • Then select Start-->Run--> and type gpedit.msc
  • A dialog box appears ,under Computer configuration double click Windows Settings and again double click Scripts(startup/shutdown) in the right pane ,then double click shutdown.
  • In the new window, click add-->Browse, locate your "ntosboot.bat" file & click "Open".
  • Click "OK", "Apply" & "OK" once again to exit.

  • Now Start-->Run-->devmgmt.msc
  • Double click on "IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers".
  • Right click on "Primary IDE Channel" and select "Properties".
  • Select the "Advanced Settings" and select 'none' instead of 'autodetect' & click "OK".

  • Come back, Right click on "Secondary IDE channel", select "Properties" and repeat the above process.
  • Reboot your computer.
Windows XP will now boot really faster..
